چکیده

Kala-azar or visceral leishmaniasis is usually associated with progressive emaciation in spite of the fact that the patients generally have a good, at times voracious, appetite and their diet is not often greatly restricted. Apart from emaciation, signs of avitaminosis, viz, xerophthalmia, Bitot's spots, glossitis, angular stomatitis, dryness of the skin, etc., have often been noticed by one of us (P. C. S. G.) in course of routine examination of the cases attending the kala-azar out-patients' department of the Calcutta School of Tropical Medicine, during the last decade, particularly since the Bengal famine of 1943 and during the outbreak of kalaazar in Calcutta that followed the famine (Sen Gupta, 1947).
